How can braces help me?
When teeth are aligned and straight they function properly and are easier to clean, which can allow them to last longer.

Do I need a referral from my dentist?
Often, a dentist recommends a patient to the practice but a patient may call and schedule a consultation without a referral.

Is there a charge for an initial consultation?
No. All initial consultations are free.

How long will my treatment take?
Once the evaluation has occurred, Dr. Burns will be able to give you an estimated treatment time. Typically, most cases take between (12 to 24) months to complete.  Some adults can receive treatment in as little as six months.

What is adult orthodontic treatment?
Adults can benefit from orthodontic treatment by straightening their teeth and correcting bite issues. The orthodontic treatment can enhance the patient’s facial appearance and help protect their teeth for life; thus preserving them. 

Do you offer Invisalign®?
Yes, we offer this product. For some patients it is a great way to achieve a beautiful smile that is less obvious than conventional braces. 

What are first phase braces? 
First phase braces are typically for children under the age of 11, who suffer from a lack of space for their adult teeth to descend. The patient will utilize a first phase orthodontic treatment to create space for their permanent teeth. Another instance in which a first phase may be necessary is to intercept unfavorable growth patterns and prevent further jaw disharmonies. 

Do I continue to see my dentist while receiving orthodontic care?
Yes, it is recommended that you continue to see your dentist every 6 months for a regular               check-up and cleaning. The dentist and the orthodontist perform different functions in effectively providing you with optimal oral health care.  Both, clinical professionals are needed to achieve this goal. 

Will you coordinate care with my dentist?
Yes. Dr. Burns is an advocate for continuity of care and communicates with your dentist while you are a patient with the practice.

Is there a lot of pain?
Some discomfort is common at various points in the treatment process but does not usually interfere with your activities of daily living. Typically, over-the-counter pain relief medications combined with a gum numbing agent are sufficient to ease the discomfort. 

What if I need oral surgery? 
Dr. Nikia Burns, DMD, MS is trained to treat cases with oral surgeons.  Both specialist work together to help you achieve your optimal smile.

Are their convenient appointment times?
Yes, we have three office locations.  Appointment times are available before and after school or work.  It is important to your treatment plan to keep all schedule appointments.  If you are unable to make your scheduled appointment please, be courteous and give our office at least 48 hours advanced notice.  

Orthodontics is a specialty branch of dentistry used in treating patients with improper positioning of teeth when the mouth is closed (malocclusion), which results in an improper bite.  The treatment protocol for irregular teeth and jaws use appliances, including  braces, positioned by a credentialed Orthodontist.
